Venus connects Soho Square with free ultra fast wifi for the first time
Venus Business Communications has fitted out Soho Square with free ultra fast broadband for the first time to celebrate the SohoCreate festival and London’s thriving creative industries.
Venus’ 10 gigabits per second service is the fastest fibre-based leased line service in London.
The wifi connection will be available from the 6th to 10th June throughout the SohoCreate festival and free to event ticketholders or anyone visiting the square throughout the five days. People will be able to connect to the Venus network for uninterrupted streaming, connectivity, and even work.
Connecting Soho Square, which is at the heart of the most creative square mile in the world, highlights the need for London's creative businesses to access superfast broadband - essential to their business success. Just 2% of the UK has fibre to their premises, meaning they rely on copper to a fibre cabinet, which provides slower, unreliable speeds. London's booming film, digital, advertising businesses rely on speed for faster uploads and downloads to be successful.
Venus offers 10 gigabit per second fibre leased lines, which will transform the industry’s working environment, making it much more efficient to transfer and share online (e.g. post production videos) at thousands of megabits per second.
Visit Soho Square and get connected: Venus is encouraging Soho’s workers to visit Soho Square, and even to bring Internet-heavy work (e.g. uploading / downloading video content), and get connected to their ultra fast broadband.
Ben Coulson, Director at Roundtable Film, which has implemented 100 Megabit per second leased line connectivity, says; “At normal broadband speeds it would take a couple of hours to upload on top of the 90 mins to export, so people would not be able to see the film until three to four hours later. Uploads now take minutes. There isn’t an option of having normal broadband. Uploading quickly has become essential.”
Tom Harvey, CEO at SohoCreate says; We're excited to team up with Venus to get Soho Square connected with super fast fibre broadband for our guests at SohoCreate festival. Fast connectivity is crucial for creative businesses
Brian Iddon, Director at Venus comments; Soho has long been recognised as a world hub for creativity, but evidence shows that lack of broadband is starting to drive creative businesses out. London can't risk losing swathes of the UK's £14bn a year creative industry because of lack of basic infrastructure. There IS the option for London businesses to have super fast connectivity - and that option is Venus”
Sir Peter Bazalgette, Chair of Arts Council England, commented for Soho Create: I fear for the future when I read of a creative agency in Clerkenwell sending memory sticks on a bike to its clients because internet upload speeds are so slow. Even in the much-vaunted “Silicon Roundabout” area of east London, 47 per cent of companies say poor broadband is an issue for them.”
